2021 Sales Tax Holidays for Back to School 


Back-to-school shopping is almost here for many. And, as every parent knows, the bill for new clothes, shoes, backpacks, and other schools supplies can get very high, very quickly.

Some states host a sales tax holiday before school starts. Most of these back-to-school sales tax holidays are in August and run through the weekend.  Look for your state below for dates and additional information. 

  • Alabama’s Back to School Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on July 16 and ends at 12:00 a.m. on July 18th, 2021. Click here for more information on what items are tax-exempt during this holiday. 
  • Connecticut’s taxfree holiday takes place from Aug. 15 to Aug. 21, 2021. Click here for more information.  
  • Florida’s tax-free weekend is now 10 days long! The School Sales Tax holiday runs from Saturday, July 31, 2021, to Monday, August 9, 2021. Click here for more information. 
  • Iowa’s tax-free weekend is August 6th-7th. You can learn more about Iowa’s sales tax holiday program by clicking here.

  • Kentucky will not be having a sales tax holiday or tax-free weekend in 2021.
  • Maryland’s sales tax holiday lasts nearly an entire week – Aug. 8 to 14 in 2021 – the second Sunday in August through the following Saturday. You can find more information here
  • Massachusetts‘ Sales Tax Holiday for 2021 will occur on August 14 and 15. Retail items of up to $2,500, purchased in Massachusetts for personal use on these two days, will be exempt from sales tax. You can find more information by clicking here

  • Mississippi’s 2021 Sales Tax Holiday takes place between 12:01 A.M. Friday, July 30, 2021, and 12:00 Midnight Saturday, July 31, 2021. You can find more information by clicking here

  • Missouri’s Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 6, and runs through Sunday, August 8. You can find more information by clicking here 
  • New Mexico’s Sales Tax Holiday is August 6th-8th. During the New Mexico tax-free weekend, you won’t pay sales tax on the following: 
    • Clothing or shoes must be priced at less than $100 per unit
    • The price limit for desktop, laptop, tablets, or notebook computers is $1,000
    • The price limit for related computer hardware is $500
    • School supplies for use in standard, general-education classrooms must be priced under $30 per unit

  • Ohio’s Sales Tax Holiday is August 6th-8th. You can find more information by clicking here

  • Tennessee’s traditional sales tax holiday on clothing, school supplies, and computers begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 30, 2021, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 1, 2021. Click here for more information on what items are tax-exempt during this holiday.
